As a youngster I lived for the day that I could have a pair of Tacks, but my parents simply couldn't afford them. Eventually I found a pair of used ones that I talked them into getting for me. They were too small, but I'd be damned if I was going to admit to that fact. I knew I'd cram my feet into them somehow and I did. The Tacks and I spent hours on the ice at the Harold Harvey Arena in Kingston.

My first ...and... only kangaroo skin Tacks which I bought in the Fall of 1969. I think they were $130. I still have them, although they are now somewhat tight..I guess they "shrunk" in storage, much the same as a lot of my clothes have http://s917.photobucket.com/albums/ad20/dobie45/TACKS%20%201969/

skates tacks were useful well if I then to say..as soon as the winter approached, I was happy, I polished the leather of my skates,… and I was in a hurry to go to patinate
Nice pictures of these old skates. Worn leather brings back memories. I would like to be able try a pair of those one day. All I had was a pair or stiff cold bottom line ccm figure skates when I was younger. I remember wearinng them even tho they were too tight just because I wanted to skate. I bought a skating pass for the area which I went 3+ times a week plus the many time I went to the skating rink at the little lake in town and the trips I made by buss to the Rideau Canal. Those were my winters, until one of my blades came loose.
John, yes I lived in that area. I was just across the river on the Qc side. I was born over there but the "wild" west and it's gold promises (there's none by the way) attracted me away years ago. The canal was a hoot. I could skate it 2-3 times get a beaver tail and go back home. Those were good times!
yeah !! my first skates were CCM tack the photos are cool !

bikedenis you're bang on. I remember I couldn't wait for hockey season to roll around again.
These days with summer leagues and hockey schools I don't know whether there's the same kind of anticipation or not. I suppose for many there is.
Yeah John but I don't know, in my young time was looking forward to the winter arrives to try our skates. But the youth today is something else
but the summer, I use my roller skate or my bicycle s

Those tacks looks like you could fly with them.
yeah when I finally got my first pair of Tacks, they were too small. but I absolutely refused to wear anything else.
hey Zephyr did you once live in the Ottawa area? How did you end up on the Rideau Canal?

Cool. I live 40 minutes west of Ottawa. We try to make it to the canal a couple of times a year, but the season is getting shorter and shorter.
