CCM Mustang
Received the following letter from a feloow naqmed Ryan. Can anyone help him out? John
Am looking for a picture of my childhood bike. i found some that were close
but just not the same. 1975-79 ccm mustang 3 speed, gold colour with the
suicide shifter. it had gold flakes in the seat and a small sissy bar. also
cant quite remember if it had ape hangers or not. any pictures would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan
Hello Ryan:
I have a 1969 Mustang three speed gold in color and gold seat, grips etc. It has the stick shift as well. If you had a 1975-79 Mustang three speed it would not have had the stick shift. After 1972, due to safety concerns, the shifter was removed and a thumb shifter on the handlebars was used. I will post a picture of my Mustang for you. Hope this helps.

+1, the stick shift was dropped at the end of the 1972 model year, however it is possible the the stick shift was an aftermarket additiion. If you can remember them, there are a number of other characteristcs that may aid in determining the period of your Mustang.
1. Frame style: In 1970 CCM changed the frame, extending the seat stays foward of the seat tube in a gracefully curve until they turned sharply downward to meet join the down tube, about 4-6" behind the head tube.
2. Shifter Style: The tri-lobular shaped Sportshift that mounted to the side of the top tube was used on the 1968-1969 Mustangs. The long, roughly rectangular Sportshift that mounted to the top of the top tube was used for 1970-1972. The traditional, handlebar mounted trigger shifter was used on the 1973-1977 Mustangs.
3. Sissy bar height:. For 1970-1972 CCM outfitted the Mustangs with high sissy bars that extnded about 10" above the saddle.
4. Head badge style: In 1973 CCM switched from the oval style to the rectangular style.
Carl's picture depicts a pre-1970 frame style with the tri-lobular Sportshift and a short sissy bar. For comparison, I'm including a photo from the 1972 catalogue showing the later frame style with the 1970-1972 style Sportshift and sissy bar.
Of course, the other possibility is that it was not a Mustang but some other CCM hi-riser, as they were often generically referred to as Mustangs, even though hte actual model name might differ.
