Western Tire Bicycle

I'm doing some work on a neighbour's bicycle that he bought new circa 1964.

A single speed coaster Western Tire bicycleThe badge says Made in Canada..

Who made it? It has has cottered cranks and a unique BB.

The spindle shows signs of a serious accident. It may be hard to tell from the photo but both

ends are bent.

I've never seen a spindle like this.

accident or metal fatigue?

The drive side crank also shows signs of repair

Anyone have any info on these bikes?

Anyone have a straight spindle?

Thanks

$47.00 in 1955 is equal to $460.00 in today's money....

It was definitely made by CCM. What type of work do you have to do on this bicycle?

John Williamson

My plan was to repack the bearings, clean it up (no paint)

I have a pair of clean rims/tires to put on.

new chain and I have a period red/white saddle.

The warped spindle makes me think the bike will never ride properly

so I'll speak to the owner and see what he wants to do.

He may want it as a display/wall hanger.

I seriously doubt I'll find another spindle.

Bike has caged bearings which surprised me but

I usually just work on British 3 speeds.

If you give me a day or two, I will see if I have another spindle - I think I do. Of course you can always just set those parts aside and fit a CCM one piece crank which would make things much easier. Let me know if you need parts. Fitting those cottered crank arms is a nuisance unless you saved the cotters. I may even have replacement arms. I live in Edmonton but I can mail the parts. Prices will be reasonable.

Thanks

I'm well versed in cottered cranks and would prefer to

keep original,

Please have a look and let me know.

mine measures 5 1/2" (+/-) across.

Any thoughts on the cause of the damage?

The frame is straight.

I know he lived on a farm.

Run over by a tractor??

Hi Greg,

I found the axle already. It is just like the one in your picture. If you would like it, I can send it to you via Canada Post for a total of $25 (postage and axle). You can use PayPal if you like to jdwillia@telus.net. The axle in your picture was simply bent by running one of the crank arms into a very solid object. I am not sure that the crank arms on your bike are original, but this does not really matter if they fit the axle.

I will need to know your street address. My email address is as above.

If John unable to help,  hoopriderparts has one for sale that looks correct

I just spoke to the owner and he did indeed have a serious spill on the bike

years ago and the crank was heated and bent back into shape.

Thanks for the hoop link

I've ardered from them in the past

Greg

thanks to John and CBG for the input.

Inspired by the arrival of a new spindle I've started to

re assemble with a mix of original and better parts.

The wheels are Canadian 28" (these are what I have

in the garage) and I'm waiting on some new rubber.

I concur, the frame appears to be CCM manufacture. Assuming 1960s, the serial number will be stamped on the rear, non-drive side dropout and may tell us the exact year of manufacture.

K

I'll have a look.

The serial number starts with "J" so it would appear to be a 1967 bike.....

It might be a 1967 model if it was manufactured late in the year but a J-code indicates the 1966 calendar year.

Update

The spindle from John arrived yesterday and was installed.

As it turns out, the chainring was also quite out of true.

Some coaxing with a mallet and c wrench has made the bike rideable.

I'm not putting the chain guard or the fenders back on as they're

very rusty and the owner can put the man hours in if he wants.

The owner seems happy and the bill for parts was $120.54.

I'll keep my eye open for a good chainring.
