CCM Flyer BB axle

Hello,

I have a question that maybe someone can answer.

What material did CCM use for their Flyer BB axles?

The material, specification and process would be nice to know.

i.e.

Material type

Heat treated to hardness (Brinel or Rockwell number)

Or were the axles case hardened?

If anyone has a BB axle marked CCM Flyer in good shape I would like to purchase it.

This one is pretty sad.

Tony couldn't you get it spay welded  like a  steel crank and refinished?

just a thought

Greg,

Thanks for the reply.

I want to lay a thin bead of weld in the damaged areas and re-machine to spec.

Be nice to know the material and hardness for selection of the weld rod.

John Barron has an interesting blog on his Velostuf website about saving a fork crown bearing face by grinding on a small lathe and using a Dremel to renew the bearing surface. His pictures show a huge improvement before/after and it would appear the fork crown in question was non-hardened. I've cleaned them up myself using a lathe which certainly helps for a casually ridden collector bike but I doubt would hold up for a serious training, racing or commuting bike.

I wish I had a Flyer BB axle to offer, (or any part of a Flyer)

Jamie

Thanks Jamie,

Here is a link to the article you mention.

Pity you do not have any Flyer parts.
