Ccm massey information
Hello all, I'm in search of details for a bicycle that I have in my collection. It was purchased at a clearing sale a few years ago. At the sale it was stated the bicycle was hung on the shed wall when the owner headed off to WW1. It remained hanging there for over 100 years, if this is all correct. The rear hub is marked Canada Cycle Motor. The front badge is missing. Cotterless cranks. Please see pics for more details. The lamps, tool bag and horn have been added . I would like to learn what date it would have been manufactured and what model the bike would be. I'm in Victoria Australia. And information would be much appreciated. Thanks Andy Pleming
Hi Andy
Is the fork on your bike have a solid fork crown or 3 blades like most Massey Bikes ? Can you see an outline of the head badge shape on the paint.? Also is the rear hub a coast brake hub or fixed wheel , and say Hercules on it
. Not positive but I think CCM changed to 1/2 inch pitch chain about 1908, yours has a 1 inch pitch which makes it before that . I have a Massey bike like yours with CCM Massey Silver Ribbon on the head badge Made in Toronto. So I would say it is before 1917 as after that badges say Weston.
Do you know Paul Watson in Melbourne as hae should be able to help?
Regards Dave
Agreed, it should be pre-1917, as the Weston serial numbers didn't get that high before they added an alpha character. If you know the name of the original owner, it should be relatively easy to find his attestation papers for the military. That should help determine the minimum age.
I don't think that I'd place too much emphasis on the 1" pitch drivetrain, as this could have been market preference. For instance, CCM was shipping steel rimmed bicycles to Australia when the Canadian market received wooden rims.
I don't see an arm on the rear hub, so if it's the armless coaster brake hub, those were introduced for the 1909 model year, which would be the maximum age, assuming it is OEM.
Hi Dave, thanks for your reply. The fork crown is solid. The head tube appears short compared to a Massey with a ribbon badge. It appears to have been attached at 2 points vertically at 2 1/16" centres. No real clear shape , but I'd guess rectangular??
It is a coast break hub with Hercules on it.
I can't place Paul Watson but the name rings a bell.
Outstanding story ! Quite amazing to hear of a bicycle being hung up in a shed and staying there for over 100 years !
Just as amazing is the fact I have lived 5 minutes from the CCM plant that bicycle was made at in West Toronto for the last 59 years. Our family home bought in 1957. So my family has lived near the CCM factories for or over 67 years now.
There is one remaning building left on the CCM Factories property. The others have been torn down.
10 Minutes North of me is where the CCM factory was from 1918-1983. I have always been a short bike ride to either of the CCM factory locations. Some of my friends parents worked at CCM in Weston.
All of this has nothing to do with your bike but it sure makes me think of the impact CCM had on the world and still does with its product they made and sold here in Canada and sold worldwide.
I am a local Historian and have aquired quite a large collection of all things CCM from 1899-1983.
I am a member of The West Toronto Junction Historical Society and also a member of the Weston Historical Society.
Between those two areas of Toronto along Weston Road is an are called Mount Dennis.
Weston is on the North side of Mount Dennis and the West Toronto Junction is on the south side of Mount Dennis.
i have lived my whole life in Mount Dennis.
When you figure out all you can about this wonderful bicycle, I would love to share your bike and story with the Historical Societys if you are willing to share. It would be greatly apprieciated.
I would love for you to get a replacement head badge for the bicycle too. I would like to see if Dave can figure out what one it needs. I saw Dave at the Wheelmans Christmas Social event a couple weeks ago. Dave is certainly a great resource for that period of CCM bicycles.
T-Mar is another oustanding resource for CCM information in Canada. You certainly have the right people replying to your request for information.
All the best in finding everything you are looking for and more.

Thanks for your reply too. T-MAR.
Cheers Darren, I'll keep gathering information and can forward to you . Thanks Andy
Hi Darren, and I appreciated your story and connection to CCM.
Hi Andy
The reason I asked if it had a solid fork crown or 3 plates is that the racing model had the solid fork crown. I have some pictures from down under that show the head badge with only 2 turns of the badge as compared to 3 that most Massey head badges have. But looking at the picture you sent showing the head tube and crown Iam not sure that is what it looked likebut might be. I would think your bike has Metal westwood rims on it British size 635 I think. Are the head badge holes both at the front of the bike if so I don't think the massey head badge would mount like that.
Dave
Hello Dave, Regarding the head badge. The 2 pinning points are forward and centre on the tube. I've attached another pic of the head tube and you can see pinstriping , I would assume was around the badge. It might mean something to you when trying to pin point what badge it would have had.
