Footnote (of the "It's a Small World" variety)
Today I was in Kingston and dropped my wife and her mother off at the shopping mall to look around while I went to do the same at Pickers' World. While browsing the market, I came across a young lad with an older Brooks saddle sitting in his showcase. I asked him if he had any other bicycle items for sale. He thought about it, then said he didn't, but said there was another fellow there who dealt in bicycles who might. We found the other lad who said he had sold many bikes over the years, but had nothing right then. Said his interest in bikes stemmed, in part, from the fact that his great grandfather had been one of the area's largest bicycle dealers. When I asked him his great-grandfather's name, he said William Normile. Go figure.
small world, hey
It really is Max.
I live in a small town (pop. 6,000). On the edge of town there used to be a small antique shop that a fellow and his wife ran in their house. Mostly furniture and glassware, but I'd stop in every now and then and pick up something. It was called Peace's Antiques and I knew the gentlemen's name was Doug. What I didn't know was that Doug Peace had been a Canadian champion bicycle racer and had represented Canada on a CCM Flyer at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. He was also a life-long sales rep for CCM and his dad Harvey had also worked for the company designing many items including the CCM Flyte. Unfortunately by the time I discovered all this Doug Peace had passed away and his wife had moved away. I often wonder what I would have learned if I had known who Doug was.
BTW for those who were wondering the lad wanted $50 for the leather seat. I didn't buy it, but I probably should have. Right?
i would of offered him $40, but $50 is a fair price if the condition is good to very good
it's always good to have a spare vintage Brooks saddle.....if it's pre-1939
It was in very good shape .....and yes I'm kicking myself now.
