Hygenic Cushion Full Suspension Bike 1896

Hi,

I've had this in my basement for 25 years.  Found in barn like storage in 1995.

I believe it is a CCM.  Shock is date stamped Nov 10, 1896

Both handle bar and rear leaf spring/seat stay shock function.  Hubs stiff but rubber on wheels prevents spinning properly.

Never tried to look up value before.  I don't really have display space for it and feel it's under appreciated in my basement.

Considering selling it.

Newbie here, apologies if pics not clear.  Think I'm losing resolution in upload.

The family of bikes...

Bike is a CCM  Perfect model .   Bike is around 1910 not 1896 . better picture of the Head tube and fork crown would help. Where are you located? i might be interested.

The fenders were added later. They are the steel dropside style of the late 1920s-1930s. In 1925 Ladies bikes still had grommets for lacing in a fender skirt, which this bike doesn't have.

The chainring is 1" pitch "skiptooth" which means around 1910 or earlier (1901-1910). My guess is it likely originally had a rounded steel fender with grommets on the rear, and a "shorty" steel front fender. There's also a chance it had a wood rear fender and no front fender. If it's a CCM Perfect, I have the men's match to this bike.

Are there little screw holes on the head tube where the badge used to be? As Dave said, a photo of that area, and location would be great. If there are no screw holes, it may not be a CCM (a Planet?).

p.s. Can you read any of the stamp marks on the rear hub brake? Is there a brake arm on the hub? The original wood rims might have been swapped out at the same time the fenders were added. An I.D. on the hub would help figure this out. If Dave doesn't buy it first, I could make an offer on it.

Hi Gentlemen,

I could not find markings on the hubs.  Surprisingly I never noticed there is not a brake arm.  I wonder how it stops?  Sole of feet?

The head badge is missing but there is a pin/screw remnant on each side.

Great info guys, thank you.  I'll post some more pics.

I am on the Left Coast (Vancouver Island) which I suspect most members aren't.  Not sure if shipping is an option.  Depends if willing to have partially disassembled or not. I have been fearful to touch anything on it as to not disturb patina or historical markings.

Thank you Jason

I saw somewhere on this site the BB bulge was to get one piece crank arm out.  Ingenious way to keep BB diameter smaller.
I never noticed the 1" skip tooth pitch before either.  I was too impressed by the full suspension turn of century aspect.

Love the sills stem

Im interested in the bike and located in Victoria if youre interested in selling

Shipping a bike this old can be a challenge. Due to the heavy weight it probably needs to be sent in 2 boxes and Canada Post will either give an outrageous quote or won't take it at all. I had to use UPS when I shipped a heavy bike frame to the USA. Also, on old bikes the handlebar stem is sometimes stuck in the headtube making it difficult to take apart to fit in a bicycle box. Shipping is possible but selling locally in one piece is always the preferred outcome.

To far for me to be of interest. I don't see a problem shipping it, just cost. Should be no problem putting in bike box. just some work taking it apart. Have shipped lots of bikes UPS or Fedx.  Canada post has not taken a bike for years.

Any more info on the bike, so it's a 1901-1910 CCM Perfect?

Thought on what is a reasonable market price to ask?

Thank you, Jason

Maybe cbgimse will make a solid offer. It has potential with the suspension but needs a lot of work plus $ spent on it for paint and replating some parts in nickel. A badge is probably $150 if one can be found; wood rims are $300. Then you still need a wood chain guard and wood rear fender.

Are there any pics out there of a restored one with all the wood?

I'm curious what they looked like.

Well Cbgimse, might be yours if your interested.
