Unknown 1942 CCM Bike- Family Heirloom Tribute Re-built- Need more info please HELP!

I recently acquired this CCM bike from my Grandfather right before he passed away.  He told me he bought it when he was 16 with his paper route money, he bought it second hand during WW2.  I told him I was going to restore it and ride it everywhere, which made him so happy.

I want to know more about it and restore it close to the original but I don’t know much about bikes.  It’s in great working order, most of the parts are the original (except the seat and I can’t figure out if the handle bars are original) I’ve gathered from the serial number which i believe is 3H4409 that it is a 1942.

Can anyone give me tips, tell me more about it, what possible model it is, what it once look liked?  Also where I might be able to source parts, the tires need to be replaced they are 26” x 2 x1 3/4 balloon tires.  Thank you so much any and all help would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi

i would say the bike is original except the seat. Even the aluminum pedals are from the 40,s.and the bars are correct . I just sold a new pair of tires that would have fit your bike. Some one on this site should be able to help with tires. Good luck with the bike.

Below is the catalogue page for that model. There are folks on here with parts. You can try Roger at Braun's in Kitchener or Clayton at Backpeddling in Guelph or come to the vintage bike show in Brantford on June 22. Good luck with the resto. It's great to have that kind of history with a bike.

Thanks Dave and John for the information.  The catalogue page is a big help.  I've been sanding it down slowly the last couple days and it's been like a treasure hunt.  I found some of the old white pinstipes and instead of traces of an ivory sunburst head I've been finding gold. Which could mean it may be a "Special"? Although the rims are definitly 26's which doesnt quite add up.  I also found this gold decal which looks to fainly say Oshawa cycle perhaps!

I read that they discontinued the "Balloon" Men's Roadster in Sept 1941.  Am I wrong about the serial number being from 1942?

Wish I could come to the show, I live in BC now though. WIll have to coordinate my visit home next summer around next years show.

Cheers

Hey Jillian. Welcome to the site. Our crew at "Scullions Vintage Bicycle Club" in Nelson are helping Jillian with tips and advice to restore this great example of a 40s balloon tire CCM but she is determined to do all the work herself. The fact that it's a tribute build for her dear old grandfather makes it so much cooler. We've already had her out riding it on the street with the crusty old tires and misaligned rear fender but it's now torn completely down and ready for her to do some body and paint. An era correct chain guard should also be on her wish list with a '40s saddle, so anyone who has one that they can part with should contact her so we can get her riding ASAP.

Wow what a wonderful cycle. I believe in old is gold. I know it is very old but we can paint it and use it with the proper maintenance. It is a wonderful memory of your forefather.
