1904 CCM Catalogue!

Greetings,

I obtained these images from the original catalogue at the Toronto Reference Library rare book collection. This is an important catalogue because at this time CCM has had a few years to consolidate its product line from the different lines of the five companies that merged in 1899. We can see the bikes, like the cushion frame for example, that CCM hoped would rekindle demand for new bicycle purchases after the big market collapse of 1899.

It is interesting to note the absence of fenders on the mens bikes and front fenders on ladies models. Fenders appeared in the 1901 CCM Dominion catalogue, but that catalogue shows bikes for the European market. For the domestic market, one wonders if fenders were optional, or if they were reserved for more upscale models like Massey for example. Other items of note are the use of 1" pitch chains and sprockets, the Morrow hub brake, and the half metal chain guard. I was very surprised to see this guard in this catalogue because it appears in catalogues in the early 1920s so I had thought it was a more modern evolution from the old-fashioned full guard of metal and wood.

And finally, the biggest surprise, at least to me anyway, was the presence of the FLYER racing bike! I had always thought these bikes first appeared in the 1920s, but nope, there it is in 1904.

Some pages below are zoomed in images of a preceeding page.

(I will post images seperately)
