My latest find 1928 Massey-Harris ccm
DI picked up this beat up CCM bicycle the other day, it looks to be all original, except for the fact that the previous owner hacked the frame in order to fit a motor on it. I plan on restoring it to its original glory. It doesn't have a head badge, so I'm not sure of the model. I would appreciate any information about this year of bike or the original colours these bikes were painted.
The tires on it are bulldog heavy duty made in Canada for the T Eaton company. Maybe they were original to the bike?
This bicycle started it's life as a Motorbike model, based on the dual top tube frame, truss forks and motorbike style handlebars. The crankset would appear to be a replacement as OEM spec was a Triplex, which would be consistent with the Gibson pedals. It's missing the cross brace for the handlebars, rear axle stand, pump and saddle tool bag. OEM spec tyres were Dunlop Traction Cord. The 1928 catalogue illustration shows it with a Delta electric lighting system but does not mention it in the specifications. Available colours were No. 14 (black with gold stripe), No. 24 (maroon with gold stripe and sunburst head), No. 36 (sapphire blue with gold stripe and sunburst head) and No. 39 (green with red stripe and gold sunburst head).
Please note that while the serial number indicates 1928 manufacture, it could be a 1929 model manufactured in late 1928. Also, while it has a triple plate fork crown, it may not have been badged as a Massey, as the triple plate fork crown appears to have been the standard fork for the Motorbike models circa 1928.
T-Mar Thnx for the info, I appreciate it. I have the cross brace. Do you have any leads where I could find a rear axle stand, pump and tool bag, I didn't see anything on eBay. Please excuse my ignorance but what are you referring to when you say sunburst head?
Sorry, I don't have any sources for the missing parts. A sunburst head is a paint scheme wherein the head tube is painted a contrasting colour, along with elongated, triangular "sun rays" extending onto the top and down tubes. Sunburst heads are typically white or gold, with the rays outlined in the same colour as the frame stripes. In the case of motorbike style frames, the lower of the two top tubes typically does not have any rays.
