1937 CCM Flyte

My wife has always liked the 1936 CCM Flyte that I restored many years ago in Blacl/Cream that hangs in my basement display room. She wanted me to move this Flyte to the maim floor and put it above the fireplace mantle. I thought that it would be better if I restored another Flyte for this purpose. As a result, I spent my hours restoring a 1937 Flyte, and I have tried to duplicate the colours and pinstriping of the original. I put it above the fireplace mantle today, and here are a few pictures of it.

Nicely done. Looks great.

Hello John what a great looking Mantle  My wife is jealous,

Greg

I think a few collectors might be jealous of both the bike and of a wife that lets you put one the mantle.

Great restoration! yes

Ooops! Typo!

should have read: "put one on the mantle"

Looks great John, I'd love to see some pics of the '36 Flyte you have as well sometime. My wife lets me put ours in the livingroom. We're just missing the fireplace mantle  smiley

As always, a super job John.  One Shot??

Great job John and better yet the wife allowing you to put on the mantle. I get a no when I ask. Did you use one shot on the frame?

I did use "One Shot" Maroon for the frame, pinstriping, fender centre stripe and white back, and the red centre and white border on the rims. I had the "Ashes of Roses" colour mixed several years ago in an alkyd enamel to match the colour on an old fender. For this restoration, I had the "Ashes of Roses" colour put in a spray can. The cream colour for the sunburst head was simply a Tremclad off white. This was edged in "One Shot" Gold. Typically, the Dunlop 28 X 1 3/4 W.O. rims had poor chrome when I started. I cleaned them up, sanded them with fine sandpaper, and used acid etch primer underneath a fine silver/aluminum base coat. This was then clear coated, and when it had dried for a few weeks, it was pretty tough. The red rim centre stripes edged in white were difficult to do. At first, I thought that I could paint on the Red "One Shot" and then mask it with fine line tape to do the thin white edges. When I pulled the masking tape off the Red "One Shot", I lost several small pieces of the Red. I ended up doing the Red over and putting on the white edges once the wheels were built and mounted in a wheel truing stand, using a pinstriping tool and slowly rotating the wheel.

"a fine silver/aluminum base coat" as chrome on the wheels ????  c'mon .....nooooooo

let's see some close-ups of the rattle can paint job and pinstripping please

Max,

I try to stay away from getting things chrome plated. The last time I had a quote from a plater to get a pair of these rims done, it was over $300. Add to this, the difficulty trying to get paint to stick to the chrome (red) and edge it in white. What? mask and sand the centre of the rim before painting? Even CCM never really got the paint to stick very well to these rims. To find a really nice original pair is a very difficult task. Chrome plating also weakens the metal unless it is baked in an oven for some time after the plating is done. Many platers also do not ensure all traces of their acid bath are properly rinsed away after plating and replated parts can rust in unplated sections.

My "rattle can paint job" is not a rattle can paint job at all. I apply One Shot paint by brush. I prefer this method to any kind of a spray finish because it gives a smoother surface. I strip frames to bare metal and use a rust remover/metal conditioner before applying SprayMax 2K Epoxy Primer.

Great job on the bike John! This is interesting to me as I'm a first time 37 flyte owner and am in the process of getting the parts together for a restoration. I was wondering how the whole re chroming the wheels then getting the paint to stick on the centre, I didn't k ow how well that would work. I was wondering, now that I know john's method of paint, how everybody else does it?. I love getting as much info before I Comitte to painting. My bike was originally blue btw.

Very cool your wife allows the bike in the living room !

I was told, buy another car and I am leaving. I still have the car !

But I do miss her.
