1941 ccm project
Hey guys I'm new to this site and I just recently picked up 1941 CCM motorbike. There are obviously several things not original to the bike Including the paint job which kind of sucks. But I have managed to get all the red off of the maroon color and it doesn't look too bad I am currently looking for a head badge for this bike, Crank and chain ring, And stem and motor bike handlebars. As far as I can tell everything else is original unless any of you guys can pinpoint anything else that's not original on the bike for me. I have tried to post more pictures of the bike but I'm having trouble doing that. I could only get one photo to upload sorry. So if any of you guys could help me out that would be so awesome. Let me know and any help is much appreciated thanks!
welcome to this forum James :)
Thanks, for some reason I'm having a hard time uploading photos! Is there a trick to it or what?
I guess I Got one photo to work but not the rest
Hi James:
Welcome to the Forum. As bikedenis mentioned, you can use the File Attachment link to post photos within a comment, the Add Image option to put them in your original post or you can cut and paste them from a photosharing site such as Flickr or Photobucket or you can send them to me - john.mckenty@sympatico.ca.
John
Thank you. I sent you an email John and pics!
Thanks John!
nice bike, but someone has painted it with a broom.
Blast, fill, repaint it the original maroon and gold. There are pictures of that bike in all it's glory around here somewhere
Yeah I may have to do that. But the red is flaking off pretty easily and maroon is shining through slowly. for some reason I have always loved the barn fresh look. I wish they wouldn't have invented paint back then, would have saved a lot of us some trouble.
or blue ocean and gold...
Anyone have a badge for this bike? I was able to find crank, chain ring , and Gibson pedals. All I need to complete is motorbike bars, stem , and badge. I'll purchase them if yah have the parts thanks!!!
Well i got all of the Red paint off of the bicycle and the maroon color is shining through. I think it looks so much better in its or original color. What do you guys think? It's a little rough but I still like the look. It's comin along.
that's better than the new color .. the original color gives some value to the bike..
Thanks! I hope so. I'll post more pics as I go along. So does anyone know for sure what color the fenders we're suppose to be original ? I'm guessing maroon. But they look like white original under the white paint.
Where do you live? Are you back east, James?
I live near Portland in Oregon.
Given the year, fender style, painted fork truss and painted rims, it almost certainly a CCM "Rambler" Motorbike. Consequently, you should be looking for a Rambler headbadge and Phillips pedals, as opposed to Gibsons. However, both bicycles used the same frame. so you it's possible to build to either specification. Also, be aware that the CCM version used the harder to find Triplex crankset, while the Rambler used the more common single piece crankset.
The Rambler Motorbike used fenders that were painted to match the frame, with the exception of a white tail on the rear. The upscale CCM version used off-white paint called Ashes of Roses. The upscale CCM model also used a longer front fender that extended notably in front of the the axle and had a second set of braces running from the axle to the front of the fender.
Thanks for all the info! WelI I ended up getting the triplex cranks, gibson pedals, ccm chainring, motorbike bars, the correct stem and badge.I have been hunting down parts on what I have been told I own. It seems to be goin good so far. I'll have it all assembled soon and post pics of the bike. The fenders and rims I have I just stripped them to bare metal cause there wasn't any paint to save underneath.
So a question? Would you guys leave the rims, fenders , and truss rods bare metal and clear coat them? Or try and match the paint and get them painted to match frame and forks?
Since your buiding it up to CCM Motorbike specs, as opposed to Rambler Motorbike specs, the truss rods and rims should be chromed. If you're not willing to go with chrome, I'd be painting as opposed to clear coating over steel, as I think that polished steel is a poor representation of chrome. I've seen some good results with some of the modern chrome paints, so you may want to consider on of those.
The fenders should be painted off-white. Lawrence Ruskin recently posted that the modern paint equivalent is called "cranberry craze", though he didn't mention the brand of paint and there's a possibility that the this shade could vary from brand to brand.
What my pal that does my painting said was the modern equivelent of that maroon paint was ''cranberry craze''
If you want him to e mail you the brand just e mail him, Harald is his name, and Toxic Design Lab is his company.
The white they used was a ''bone white'' around that time. not too sure about the pinstripe, I just looked at it and it seems to be a bit more yellow, but that could be age and/or wax.
The thing about ''whites'' is there are a wack of them, from bone white to ivory. Matching your paint with paint chips is easy.
Thanks for your sage advice on CCMs T Mar, it would be interesting to know how you got to know so much about CCMs.
Oh, and by the way, a bunch of our party animals go to Portland every year from the Vancouver area, beware, they can sweep you up into something your liver might not be ready for.
A couple of them have CCMs and parts for them so you might go on the rides and meet them, I forget the name of the thing they go down for, probably a bike swap and rides, I know they do Ironranch, and I think, something else.
Thanks for info! Mmmmm what to do. Are you saying the fenders were a solid off scale white color without pin stripes or with? And as far as chroming! were you saying there's some type of spray paint chrome that didn't look bad?
Thanks for info! Mmmmm what to do. Are you saying the fenders were a solid off scale white color without pin stripes or with? And as far as chroming! were you saying theres some type of spray paint chrome that wouldn't look all that bad?
Lawrence, I've been an avid cyclist for almost fifty years, including thirty years of competitive cycling and seventeen years as a certified cycling coach. During the bicycle boom of the early 1970s, I was mechanic, and later manager, at the local CCM dealership. My first two new bicycles were CCMs, so through that and the dealership, I developed an affinity for CCMs and over the years years collected whatever information I could find.
James, the fenders on the CCM Motorbike of this era were off-white with a centre stripe. Yes, there are some paints that give reasonable representation of chrome (at least better than polished steel, IMO). I've done some small surface area parts with good results. Of course, the durability is nowhere near real chrome and there may be some loss of effect on larger parts, like rims.
Hello James you can try some powder coated chrome for pricing.
Also some great information shared Thanks T-Mar

Ok thanks! Well I'm just Gona get it put together and just wait a bit and ride it a little here and there. I'll eventually do something! I'll post pics with it all together. Thanks for all info!
So I ended up getting the parts to start putting this baby back together. Slow goins, and a few more parts too clean up. I dropped the wheels off at a bike shop to have trued up and spokes tightened. This is as far as I got today. Hopefully be done with it in a week and will post pics.
Mmmmmmmm can't seem to get these photos to download. Wierd. Some photos I have work and some don't.
James: Was I supposed to post some photos for you....or did I already do that? Between talks, calendars and website queries, I've lost track of whatever the hell it is I'm supposed to be doing ha-ha
John
Ha ha. Yeah I'll post some pics of my bike in a week or something and if I have trouble doin that I'll let you know! It is really easy to post pics , it's not that I don't know how but for some reason some pictures load and attach and some don't want too. Thanks for asking john I'll let cha know soon
Well I got the bike done today! And took it for a spin around the block. What do you guys think? I still need to find the correct seat. Heres pics of it done:)
Here's some pics
Well one of my buddy's from the Cabe is selling me his ccm saddle! So awesome. I'll have it 100% original. Here's a pic of the saddle. I'll have it restored!
Hi guys..... I sold that saddle to James after trying in vain to have it restored here in Winnipeg. I did find a saddle maker willing to do it but he couldn't replicate the Wrights stamp on both sides of the saddle. Has anyone here had a Wrights saddle restored?
