1951 Mens CCM
I found this bike for sale in an antique store, Lavoy, Alberta. Well under $100. XXXXXC, not bad shape at all. It came with fenders and original seat. Both items undergoing repairs. The rims are unmarked Westwoods, SS. They take a 700C with only light shoehorning. The original tires were Dunlop Imperials 28 X 1 1/2". The frame is a 22-20".
Overall the bike is in good condition, good patina, also the gold CCM decal on the seat tube. An original of the type that Wayne Gillies has had reproduced. Still in good shape. I gave it a shot of clear coat to protect what's there.
The only repairs necessary have been a frozen handlebar stem and some parts replaced in the CCM 37 coaster hub.
Right! The bike, I forgot to attach it.
Congratulations on your new acquisition and thxs for sharing. Enjoy!
Nice find...
This is the first full size CCM men's roadster I have come across.
It's interesting to see the variety of lubricants that these bikes have been treated to over the years. I have a '32 that had the bottom bracket filled with crude oil.
I first noticed it as I heated the triplex crank prior to removal. Unmistakenly crude. It smelled like organic resin or incence and dripped out like brown crayon wax. This '51 had a thick, sticky, black grease that tended to absorb dirt, dry out and become a puttylike cake. Even so there was no visible damage to the bearings.
What seat does it have on it?
Nice score I have a 47 I think the frame is smaller on mine and I had to paint it .
Nice original condition,
It is great not having to repaint but sometimes..................................decency demands. There is patina, then there is PATINA.
The bike is listed in the '51 catalogue as a model M128 Mens Standard Roadster, 23".
In Maroon with Gold head insert. It did measure at 23" afterall. I noticed that but was not certain of the intended spec.
Looks like it is all there, Ashes of Roses fenders and plated Westwoods, No chainguard, standard seat, Saphire Rose grips.
Could be fairly intact. 48T crank with 18T sprocket. I had to move quickly when it came up for sale. Someone had looked after the thing all those years and at least stored it indoors. None of the rust you see in typical spots.
