CCM didn't even market a 3-speed hi-riser until 1968. The Mustang 3-speed was only catalogued in red during 1971 and 1972, though the stock saddle was black. Besides the above mentioned Cougar, another possibility might be one of the 3 speed CCM Chargers? My poster pics aren't very good, so I can't corroborate the checkered saddle but I have seen them on Chargers. Perhaps Doug could verify?
I've been able to verify that the Charger did have the checkered saddle, at least in 1970 (see pic). Still not sure about 1968 & 1969. I almost forgot about another possibility, a 3 speed, Mustang X-16, though they had either a white saddle with a red centre strip or a solid black saddle, depending on the year.
I cannot say that I've heard of the exact animal described above, but it sounds a lot like the 1968 Supercycle Cougar.
