Just found the forum while looking for info on the ccm cheetah.I just found one and was curious what dates they were made and this one has a three speed shift on handle bar,not the shifter on frame I am used to seeing. Is this normal for some?Than ks,Glen
It is definitely normal for a later model Cheetah.
What color is your's?
What's the serial number?
I actually have it took apart and in the trunk of car as I am on hoiday and headed home.Should make it there tomorrow.I will check the serial number and post it.It is purple. What years were they made?
Due to safety concerns, the handlebar shifter replaced the top tube stick shift for the 1973 model year. The purple colour is Wild Plum Metallic and indicates your Cheetaht is from the period 1975-1978.This can be narrowed down by the location of the model name. The 1975-1976 version carried the model name of the chainguard while the later version had it on the down tube..
serial number is e216064.When i got it,seemed like the shifter did have some resistance to it.I removed the rear wheel, left the hub cable attached and just swung the wheel out of the frame to compact for transport.I just put it back together and now shifter doesn't appear to be working. Can I find a tutorial somewhere?Probably going to need new rubber at some poin t too.Any suggestions on where to look?

Based on the serial number, it should be a 1973 model. The colour doesn't quite match the Flamboyant Magenta used in 1973-1974, but that could be picture exposure.
If the hub is a Sturmey- Archer, refer to the following link:
http://sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer_tech.html#adjustment
will it say sturmey-archer on it?
They are clearly iddentified if it's a Sturmey. It will look like something like this. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LcudaQU3mko/SaMZZyZSPgI/AAAAAAAACNw/UTT0vRidJm...
Sure Zephyr its a 1955 sturmey archer three speed hub ..
bikedenis, that's an exemple I took from the web to show the op what a SA 3 speeds hub looks like.
As for dating the bikes per their rear hub it's a good indication but it's an innacurate science prone to misleading. ae. I have a bike which 3 speed SA hub is telling me it's a '35 but the bike is clearly from later maybe the 60 even 70's. Hub seems original.
Just my 2 cent on the SA hub dating.
I know . for exemple : I have a CCM sunsport 1974 and I put another rear wheel but the year of this wheel is not a 74 but the hub is the same....I changed it because the " driver was too spoted. anyway, I understand me lollll I speak french and the english is another language for me :)
Just finally got a chance to clean up the rear hub and see how it was marked. It is stamped
"Three Speedhub
US Pat 3021728"
It is a bit rusted but i think that is the pat number.
That's a Shimano patent number. All the Shimano 3 speeds I've seen have used a bell crank actutator at the hub, which has a pretty simple set-up and adjustment, provided something isn't wrong in the hub itself. Basically, you set the shift lever in 2nd gear and adjust the cable tension with the knurled sleeve at the hub end of the cable, so that the "N" indicator is centred in the inspection hole of the bell crank housing.
If that doesn't work, the troubleshooting can get fairly complex. Are you sure everything was working properly before you removed the rear wheel?
I found out a link where they explain how to adjust a three speed:

I took the bike to a local shop. They told me the hub is fine, there is a problem with the actual shifter.Does that seem like a possibility?Shift from first to third and I can see the cable move?
It's highly unlikley that the problem is with the shifter. In my experience, 98% of the time the problem lies with the cable and/or hub. Your'e very vague in describing the actual problem, which makes it difficult to diagnose.
I put a link here !!!.... folow it ;)

It works fine for me and my dozen of CCM bikes with three speed :).
Why are the forum members constantly posting instructions for Sturmey-Archer hubs? Based on the previously posted patent number taken from the hub, it should be a Shimano 3 speed hub, which is a totally different beast. I've been mulling over the shop's statement that the problem is with the shifter) and was wondering if the shifter and hub are simply incompatible, being from two different companies (i.e Shimano hub with Sturmey-Archer shifter)?
