CCM Elan 6 Speed

Hi Folks,

I have this 6 speed CCM elan with the same paint scheme as the 3 spd below.  Serial number is 6157963.  The seat tube has the following information on the decal:

TM/MC Gestion CCM

1983 Holding Inc

ORIGINAL

Velo Sport Inc/Reg user

I am thinking it is around the time of the CCM closure.  Would this bicycle be an authentic "Built in Canada" CCM? Is the "VeloSport" the same company that manufactured under the same name?

Take care,

Daryl

The subject bicycle was manufactured in Quebec after the CCM bankruptcy. I believe it is a circa 1986 model. Velo Sport Inc. was a previous incarnation of Groupe Procycle Inc. The corporate organization gets a bit confusing but I believe that Velo Sport eventually became a subsidiary of Procycle. They also produced Velo Sport branded bicycles and manufactured Peugeot under license.

Thanks again T-Mar for solving my question.  The front hub turned out to be a "chair" from Japan with month and year (1985) stamped on it. So I began to think it was older than a 1983 but I had no idea of the history of the company after bankruptcy and where Velo Sport came in.  We do see a fair few vintage VeloSports in this area.  I find they are one of the better built bikes of that era and level.

Take care,

Daryl

The front hub is an Arai. They are a Japanese company that goes back to the Great War era. These days they are best known for their motorcycle helmets but they also manufacture automotive and bicycle parts. Besides hubs, I've seen their Chair brand on handlebars, pedals and brakes (both caliper and drum style). 1985 components are exactly what I would expect to see on a 1986 model bicycle

I agree with your comment regarding the Velo Sport/Procycle workmanship. They produced good value. entry and mid level bicycles during that era and had the distinction of being licensed by Peugeot to manufacture their lugless frames for the North American market. The joints and paint on their Peugeots were typically better than those of the French manufactured Peugeots.

Great to know.  Thanks for the additional info.  Being relatively new to the vintage bicycle scene, its great to know these things.
