Thanks John, i saw a photo of a POPE made bike that had a chainring with the same ring of circles on the inside. Here is a picture of the axle with a curved face
It looks like the one on the Cleveland 114 in the 1904 catalogue I posted in the catalogue forum. The resolution is not very clear in those photos so here is the same photo but zoomed-in and cropped:
Thanks Brian, when I try to count the number of teeth on the chainring in the photo you posted I get 24.I wonder if it Is it actually a photo or a drawing?

I have this identical bike as pictured in the 1904 catalogue although it is a Model 134. That coul;d make it a couple of years newer. it is a Cushion Frame Roadster. The chainring is the same but the flange is flat not curved as in the above photo. Serial; No. 233151.
Thanks for the reply but I believe the 1898 Cleveland has some very minor differences. The number of holes between the bolts doesn't match and the "bean" shape appears much narrower. The tooth count is the same but I suspect the chainring bolt circle diameter was changed to match a later model axle.
It looks something like a very early Cleveland chainring (pre 1910).

1898 Cleveland with same chainring.
