"smaller" and "bigger" doesn't mean much, but the standard cup size for 1" threaded headsets is 30.2 mm but maybe the "large" one you're talking about is 30,7 mm which is common on older bikes with one piece cranks.
my guess is that they went for more standard stuff by the mid 60's?
