Hello from southern Alberta

Hello everyone,

I have just joined up and am from southern Alberta. I have a small group of vintage CCM bicycles, the majority of which I have owned for 20+ years now. They include a ca. 1912? Cleveland Model 425 Men's, a ca. 1910? Ivanhoe 10 Men's (both of these with wooden rims), a ca. 1936 Premier Red Wing Motorbike Style double toptube Men's (badge engineered by Premier Cycle Works of Calgary, Alberta and beautifully original), a ca. 1938 Flyte Men's (recently acquired), and a ca. 1940 Roadster single toptube Men's. The only restored one is the Cleveland; out of necessity as it was purchased at a farm auction in rough condition and completely disassembled.

I am working on the Flyte which is very complete but mostly overpainted black over the original maroon & white.

I am interested in communicating with owners of CCM bicycles of similar vintage to those which I have. I am also looking for three specific bicycles: a ca. 1930's CCM Red Bird single speed Men's, a ca. 1930's CCM Massey Silver Ribbon single speed Men's, and a ca. 1961 Blackhawk single speed Men's with red frameset, white fenders and chainguard, and 28" wheels. The Blackhawks were sold through Marshall-Wells stores (at least out here in southern Alberta) and a Blackhawk of this vintage and colors was my first bicycle; purchased for me by my parents when I was aged five years. I would really, really like to be able to acquire one again.....

Best regards, David

Welcome to you David

Hi David. Welcome to the site. There are some folks here with that vintage bike, so I'm sure you'll make some connections.

Hello Dave Brown,

Thanks very kindly for your comment, and you certainly have some most interesting bicycles indeed. Is the Comet a wood framed bicycle? I was co-curator of a bicycle exhibit at the Provincial Museum of Alberta in Edmonton in 1988 and we found two bicycles in a City of Edmonton Archives warehouse; one was a Canadian made Comet and I seem to remember it as having a wood frame? and the second bicycle was a Dursley Pedersen. Also, are you able to provide further information on the wood rimmed Ivanhoe that your friend has? I would be very interested to see how similar it is to the one I have.....mine came out of a house attic in east Calgary around 1980 after I saw a little ad in the newspaper, so I have owned it for many years now. I suspect that it began its' life in Calgary. I had to repaint the frame as the original paint was just too far gone to successfully conserve and stabilize it, but everything else on it remains original including the skip tooth chain, quill style pedals, crankset, handlebars, wood rims, and the leather Comfort saddle.....the handlebars had been broken, then drilled and wired together. Amazingly I was able to 'revive' the leather of the saddle with several applications of Brooks Proofide dressing. I've ridden it some over the years and it is thoroughly enjoyable.

I hope to hear back from you again, and thanks!

Hi  David   My Comet is not the wood frame one . A friend in Nova Scotia has one or two of the wood frame ones and there is one not to far from me but I have not seen it for a long time and have lost trackof it. Mine is mostly original with wood handle bars, original paint and pedals  . It has a 1899 eclipse Morrow coaster brake hub one of the first coaster brakes out there.  The Ivanhoe my friend has that I also have not seen for awhile is all original . Back paint also comfort saddle  massey type pedals,I think one of the rims is broken. I might be able to get a picture for you but don't hold yout breath.
