I recently picked up an old CCM bike at a G-sale and am looking to find its approximate date of manufacture. It is a 5-speed bike and looks like it is all original. Serial number is D357379
PS.. I took it to a bike shop to get cleaned up and lubed, and get new tires.. Rides well and looks pretty good... except that the cables have yellowed with age... Is there anyway to get them white again?
Also, the shop put new brake pads on, but the rear set makes noise when braking.. Is there some way to fix that?
There is nothing to do for the cables. you will need to change everything but the moment you say that the bike rolled beautifully, then keep in this State, later you will be able to make change

Hard for me to say you all in english because I speak french..... il y a une çacon de faire en sorte d'écarteler légèrement les machoires de frein de façon à ce qu'ils soient en " V ".....le nez des machoires vers la jante ... sorry I can't tell you more in english ....
take the bike back to the shop and complain any good bike shop can fix this with wheel truing and or proper brake adjustment adjust the brakes so they do not wiggle front to back via the center screw but still spring open when released adjusting turn the ceter screw to adjust and then hold that adjustment and tighten and lock this with the nut and if required adjust the toe in by bending the the place where the shoes bolt on with an adjustable wrench hope this helps . william rudolph
try to wipe the cables with alchool this will not hurt the plastic covering if not happy with results try lacquer thinner but rub lightly and quickly as this will damage casing rinse with water quickly do this with outer casings off of the bike or shop around for new housing william rudolph
find a bicycle dealer that deals with babac they sell white brake cable housing. you may have to replace your inner cable due to a size difference but the new cable works much better this cable will be smoth on the outside i dont know if your old cable is smooth or ribbed william rudolph
Actually, based on the serial number it should ne a 1972 Grand Sports 5 speed. To the best of my knowledge, this was the only year that the Grand Sports was available with derailleurs. Previously they used internally geared hubs and in 1973 the 5 speed version evolved into the Elite.
While black is the most housing colour, white comes second and most bicycle shops should be able to get it, if they don't already have some in stock. I've even seen it available in universal replacement cable sets at Canadian Tire, though hte availability seems to be somewhat at the whim of their supplier. Sometimes they receive balck and other times it's white.
+1 to WR's brake set-up suggestions for dealing with noisy brakes.
1971 for your CCM. ;)
Thanks for the reply...
That just a guess, or do you know for sure?

Thanks... Yeah, I have seen that chart a number of places on the net, but it always stops at 1960... how did you figure from it that my bike was 1971?
by your letter Paul and by your model because I have the same frame but a Sunsport CCM 3 speed and my bike is a 1974
