My Humphrey Planet

Hi all, I'm hoping the astute membership can help me confirm the date on my recently acquired,(saved from the junk pile behind a local bike shop), Humphrey Planet.

I'm looking for an era appropriate saddle so would like to confirm the date first.

Apologies for the inverted pic that is a "t" in the serial number.

I think its a1948 but not sure. Any insight is appricciated.

Thank you, Doug

Rides like a champ! And the 28inch wheels take 700c rubber.

Welcome to the Forum Doug. Is that an HP or an HB on the badge?

Hello Doug,Jamie here in Brantford.Your new find is a nice original bike with a rather rare badge which I have to say is a 1960.I  had a very similiar bike which was a 1957 and was sold at CVBS13, It had the 3 speed Sturmey c/w coaster hub and was a great riding 28" tall frame doublebar, maybe I should have held onto it now that I see yours?Anyhow enjoy it and may you rescue many more!I will be able to confirm the 2nd Annual Winter Indoor CVBS2 & Swap in January shortly here in Brantford with a firm date.Best Regards Jamie

Thanks for your insight gents.

Agreed, it's a 1960 serial number, as it uses the new style frame, introduced in 1950. Also, we know that the Humphrey and Planet brands had not been combined as late as 1952.

While I don't have any 1960 CCM literature, those two tone saddles were definitely available by 1960, so it is age appropriate and may even be OEM.

Thank you T-Mar, I did note that the letter t indicated 1948 and 1960 so am pleased to find out that I have finally acquired a bike that was made the same year I was born.

The Supercycle saddle has a broken spring, left side, so I'll be posting in the wanted fourm for a replacement spring or complete saddle.

You sure know your stuff , l appreciate your time.

You're welcome Doug, It was a win-win situtation. Your  bicycle sheds just a little bit more light on the murky history of CCM's Humphrey and Planet subsidiaries. Until now, I wasn't aware of any evidence indcating that either firm had survived this late, let alone in an apparent merger. This wil be of great interest to John.

Interesting indeed. I believe the Humphrey and SCP operations lasted until 1962 when they were shut down. I had no idea that the Planet bicycle brand had been merged with Humphrey along the way. Thanks for the photos and info Doug.
