Official Boy Scout CCM

My Dad is 91 years old and grew up in Montreal.  He bought an "Official Boy Scout" CCM bicycle in around 1936 and is the original owner.  He added lights at that time - in the 30's - that generate when the wheels turn.   I am looking for a buyer who would take care of this piece.  It has probably only been ridden a couple of dozen times since about 1945 an is in very good condition.  It is located in Guelph, Ontario.

Thanks for posting it here. I'm interested too. Do you have a price in mind? brianrreynolds@yahoo.com

I'm sure everyone here would love to see photo(s) if you can manage to post one or more. I'd like to see a photo of the Boy Scout head tube badge, as I've never seen one before. -Brian

I had tried to upload several pictures but there is some issue with the size that I need to resolve.  My user profile picture is the headbadge if you can access that.   I will be in Guelph for the long weekend however.   The number there is:  519-824-1404

Thank you for the interest.  This bike is very important to my Dad; a most precious thing he kept from his youth!  :)

Interesting story on your Boy Scout bike, and all the best to your Father & family on this Thanksgiving Weekend, had a peek at your one photo on the Gallery,I see it is Maroon in colour, is this the original paint? Not 100% but any of the few I have seen or owned have been the Boy Scout Green, just a verification to all will be appreciated, with all the interest you have generated,Thanks for putting it out there for all the CCM Vintage crew,Best Regards Jamie

I to think they where all green. At least all i have seen and had. I Could be wrong also .

red ccm boy scout bicycle       i had one it is now in a museum in lake charlote in n.s.  william rudolph

It is the original paint.  Maroon with cream pin striping.   The rear fender has a cream part at the very back, about 6-8 inches.  I will try to upload some pictures this week.   This has been a very interesting series of conversations and I am quite enjoying your group.  I am not in Guelph but will be there almost every weekend this October.

I am interested in taking care of the history of this bike and actually making a serious offer, it's worth some money

send me a message on here when you are ready

thanks

It's a great story about the bike and the owner.I was talking to R Leroy and I'm waiting on information  to be sent to me.Sounds like it's very important that the proper caretaker gets possession of this one

To reduce the file size of the photos, try using a photo editor to crop them. It has worked for me on this site many times. We'd all love to see photos of your dad's bike if you can get them posted. I'd like to offer $350 and would of course conserve the bike in its original condition. Maybe someone else will outbid me and that's fine, but I'd like to post this offer here. Thank you. -Brian R. in Toronto. 416-890-2348. brianrreynolds@yahoo.com.

Hey Doumatic You were first chime on this bike are you still following up on  the sale or not interested any more ?

I will pass on this one.

I suggest she lets the bids pile up until they stop, then sell it.

Thanks for the note,

Darren

Hello Again:  It seems that pictures are now visible and I thank whoever helped with that!  This group is very enthusiastic and it has been a treat for me to share the story as well as post the bike.  You all 'get it' and that is amazing.  I know there is a picture of my Dad as a Scout...I actually have his Scout uniform, Scout watch, other Scout items ..all in the cedar chest!  He stood guard for George VI during his visit to Montreal in 1939 and has a Scout medal for that.  Imagine.  Please forgive my nostalgia; this has been part of the journey of clearing this house.   I am not being evasive on the price, just a little over whelmed with all that needs to be done at this time.  I ask for a little patience.

Hi R. Leroy. I don't know if you are willing to part with your dad's other Scout items along with the bicycle, but I thought it would be nice to keep them together if possible as it tells the story of his dedication to the Scouts (I used to work in the museum field). The bicycle is more interesting and has more meaning when accompanied by the photo and the award, etc. On that note, without mentioning your name I emailed Scouts Canada this morning with some questions. I remember going to their headquarters building on Baseline Road in Ottawa and wanted to know if it was still there and if they display items for the public to see. I wrote that I have a friend with some historic Scout items and asked if they might be interested in them, and if they offer charitable donation tax receipts. It turns out they have a small museum in their headquarters building. I will paste the response I received below for you to follow up if you wish. If you prefer to sell the bicycle instead of donating it, there's no need to feel guilty about that. Some people feel that museums are black holes where beautiful items vanish into storage never to be seen again, and items are better enjoyed among private hands. I will also attach a photo of their headquarters building. There seems to be some condition issue with the bicycle seat and the handlebars. Why do the handlebars look white in the photo? Is it paint or tape? If you do decide to donate it to the Scout museum, I can help you fix it up a bit if necessary. I can also help transport it if necessary, as I have family in Ottawa.

...This page is now allowing me to paste the letter from the Scouts. I will have to type it, sigh:

"Hello Brian,

Thanks very much for the email and for thinking of us. These artifacts sound absolutely fascinating! We do have artifacts on display at our Baseline Road location yes, we have a National Museum based there run by a small team of volunteers.

I would suggest getting in touch with them about this and they would be able to let you know if they have an interest in your items and so forth. I'm a little unsure about the charitable donation part as I think there are limitations on what we can issue donation receipts for, but they'll be able to fill you in on specifics. Their main contact email is museum@scouts.ca, because they are in part time, email is usually the best way to keep in touch. However, they do also have a phone number which is 613-224-5134 ext. 280.

Kind regards,

It starts with Scouts

Tout commence avec les Scouts

Hello Brian:  The handlebars have white tape wrapped on them - hockey tape I believe.  Not sure why...I always remember it being there.   The seat in the picture is only a fashioned cover; I took a picture of the seat itself and will try to put that up.  The bike is quite dirty I'm afraid.  I only spent a minute or so wiping it down quickly to take a few snaps.

On the Scout donation... in a way I am ahead of you.   I had found items from the sixties; my brother's items that he does not want, which includes his uniform.  The knee socks are especially charming as they have ribboned garters to be placed at the top!  I contacted the local scouting office and they are enthusiastic to have these items.

There is more to get through and there may be some other related items.  The next few weekends should reveal anything else.  Thank you all for indulging this!

Hello again.  This bike is still for sale.   Sorry for the delay.  The house had alot to go through, but it was worthwhile.  I found quite a few extra items that tie in with this bike.  What looks like a cream coloured chain guard, extra pedals, round reflector, a receipt for a bicycle lisence 1942 Montreal, my Dad's boy scout notebook with a date, a marroon coloured foot pump and a  marrooon coloured bullet-shaped horn (not working, but perhaps somebody is very clever).  There might also be some boy scout memorabilia that was his when he would have first bought the bike.  There are two pictures of him wearing his scout uniform.  (I would make a copy.)

If you go on you tube and look up King George VI Montreal 1939, there is one that is 14:53 min long.  At the 9 minute mark there are boy scouts marching behind the King and my Dad was in that group!   That may not be interesting for anybody but me, but I'm pretty thrilled about finding that footage.

There is a serious local offer now, but I would be willing to talk to anybody about making a counter offer or wanting to know more details.  It is all very cool stuff but I simply do not have the room for it.  Nor do I have the know-how for how to make it look great like you guys do!  My E-mail is:   rosemaryleroy@outlook.com   Cheers everyone.
