pre-1921 CCM Cleveland?

Hi, I believe this bicycle used to belong to my great grandfather. It is a little beat up with a dented seat stay, bent handlebars, missing head badge and a bunch of small dents around the head tube. It seems to have some features in common with some pre-1921 Clevelands I have seen pictures of. The rear hub is a CCM with a 1926 Patent stamp, the front hub, or at least the axle, is a Phillips. The pedals are also marked Phillips. The crank arms are marked CCM. The serial number is 907025. What appears to be a “2” is stamped on the chain side dropout. I assume the wheels (and at least the rear hub) would have been later replacements. The rear fender appears to be much older than the front fender which is most likely a later replacement. The seat and grips are obviously much later. At this point I just want to see if I can make it ridable. I had to scavenge a brake dust cap and locking nut from my other CCM. The (what I assume are chain adjusters) are bent or broken.

Any information on what I have, when it may have been built, information on serial numbers, if it might be possible to get a few miscellaneous parts and how those chain adjusters are supposed to work (are they in the right way?) would be appreciated.

thanks,

Paul

do you have a picture of the bottom bracket?   is there 2 bolts under there?

and do you have a picture of the headbadge? or a headbadge at all?

Yes there are 2 bolts. The headbadge is missing.

I've never seen or heard of bolts under a ccm bottom bracket. What is the story or significance behind this?

The bolts hold the crank in tight it is unit cylinder type common on early CCM bike before about 1918 The bearing cones screw in to the cylinder as a unit Cleveland used this as did others.I hope this is clear for you.Sproket is held on with 4 bolts.

seems like a 1916-1917 model, I think there are bearing cups in there, this was the transition period between both styles I think

Thanks for the response. I have been going through all of the forum posts looking for more information on this and it doesn't seem to pop up in discussion but I have sometimes caught a glimpse of what could be these pinch bolts on Clevelands and I think Massy Harris bikes. I also had a look at the 1918 accessories catalogue and it shows a head tube and fork crown for each of the Massey, Red Bird, Perfect and Cleveland. Each fork crown is different and the fork crown on my bike is like the one illustrated for the Perfect model. I don't know if these fork crown styles are specific to the models with which they are shown, and within each of these models there are various styles that are not illustrated, but maybe it is more likely a Perfect model. Sorry it looks like the photo is going to appear sideways, don't seem to be able to control that.

I think you could be right about maybe being a Perfect. If it has 4 holes for head badge that would show it as a Cleveland

It looks like it had 6 holes, 4 of which are plugged. They are arranged in an oval with 4 above the centre line and 2 below. Does that make any sense?

Well I would say there are to many holes and there was more than one head badge on at one time,  The fork does look like the one on a perfect.

Yes, 2 of the holes are smaller than the other 4. The 2 small holes are directly opposite each other at positions 90 degrees to the top tube while the 4 larger ones form a rectangle on the front of the head tube.
