serial number

I looked for a serial number on my old CCM. I found 2 very difficult to decipher numbers as the guy who gave it to me left it outside for many years. On the under side of the leather seat I found the ltters GX and on the seat post I found what I think was 10020NJV. Not sure if I had it upside down though. It could also have been ARNO340014. I'll send a picture of the bike tomorrow.

That does not sound like a CCM serial number. CCM serial numbers prior to the 1960s were generally stamped on the seat lug. Circa 1960 they started stamping on the rear dropout. In 1969, the location switched to the bottom of the seat tube. In addition to a good drive side photo, detail pictures of the head badge, serial number and rear hub markings may help.

Photos of the bike.

I purchased a Crescent ladies bike from the original owner a couple of years ago. It had exactly the same crest on it and was originally bought right after WWII. This may be when your bike was made, as well. It appears that it may have originally bben maroon.

Here are a few pix of my 1924 Crescent survivorcurrently residing in the back of one of my sheds.  Check out the wild handle bars  and custom seat

Okay I feel like a fool. The serial number I found was for a part not the Crescent bike. When I actually figured our what a seat lug was I found the serial number as clear as day V4651. Does that help date the bike in my pictures?

Yep! 1933 it is. Just search on this site or search the 'net for "CCM serial numbers" and you can find a chart that matches years to the serial numbers. According to this chart, bikes that start with a V were built in 1933. This is consistent with what I see in your photos. In 1935 CCM started using the chain wheel (sprocket) with the letters C, C, and M in the metal.

Thank you Brian. That link to CCM Serial numbers has done it. Now I can sleep at night. 1933 was about where I thought it might land. Now all I haver to do is figure out how to get it restore.

A word of caution when using the chain wheel style to date bicycles. Many of the budget brands did not convert to the CCM logo chain wheel. In the case of Crescent, they did convert to logo chainring, but others like Cadet and Crown did not.
