CCM Brand Names

Looking at a 1926 catalogue the other day, I was struck by the different brand names (as opposed to model names) used by CCM over the years. Listed were:

Cleveland

Massey

Columbia

Perfect

Red Bird

Others I've come across are:

Humphrey

SCP (Standard Cycle Products)

Cadet

Crescent

Anyone know of any others?

There is also:

Zenith

Garry

Thanks. Never heard of either. Were these regional brands or were they sold across Canada?

They were both store brands made by CCM . Zenith was sold I believe by Marshall Wells. Garry I am not sure, but I can find out and post.

I see. I grew up in Kingston and now live just east of Ottawa and I don't ever recall there being a Marshall Wells store in this neck of the woods. Perhaps they were only in western Canada.

That could be John, I know they had Marshell Wells in the USA also but used american built bicycles made by Cleveland Welding as well. I have two Zenith Balloon Tire bikes made by CCM. I just realize that Garry was sold by Ashdowns Hardware Store.

Now that you mention store brands, I recall reading that CCM made bicycles for CTC and Eatons, maybe even HBC, but I don't know under what brand names. Supercycle?

I don`t know about CTC and Eatons but CCM could have also had some agreement to keep the CCM name tag. It`s hard to say. I do know that Raleigh built for Eatons under the Glider name as I have a 1969 Glider Fastback 100 which is basically the same as the Raleigh Chopper that was built in England. This bicycle was sold at Eatons. Eatons was a bit higher end scale. Interesting stuff!

I have a 30`s Eatons Glider...pretty nice bike, built by Raleigh. Compares pretty well with the CCM`s of the day...

CCM I'm almost 100% certain built bikes for HBC, at least in the 1930s.  I own a late 30s Ranger badged bike that was bought new at  HBC in downtown Winnipeg, it corresponds exactly to CCM badged bikes of the same era, but it has British components, the rear hub and the Wright saddle, also the serial number is not on the seat tube like normal CCMs, its under the crank. Does anyone know for a fact if perhaps CCM had a British division?

Nothing I've come across has indicated that CCM had a British division. There's no question, however, that by the late 30s, early 40s CCM was using many British components on its bikes. So much so that its marketing department had a difficult time explaining why CCM bikes were more expensive than the British bikes being sold at the department stores since they were using so many of the exact same parts. It's certainly possible the Ranger was made in Canada (by CCM) using British parts.

Thanks for the info, John, that would explain alot. I'm the anonymous guy that posted the last query, didn't see that I could register! I have one more question if I may......my serial number being under the crank instead of the seat tube, was that perhaps done for storebrand bikes like mine? This is the first old CCM I've come across that was not badged CCM, also the numbers fit nowhere in the CCM  serial # list. Thanks for your help folks :)

I have been thinking about the posts on this subject and realized that the term "merchant" might be applicable to this subject matter.  I collect among many other things, Canadian pottery.  Among terms used in pottery collecting is Merchant Crocks ie pottery made by firms for specific dealers in various commodities.  These are the rarest of the examples of pottery made in Ontario or elseware.   For example a Brantford Pottery company may have made a jug for T. Walsh, Groceries, 92 Market St., Brantford, Canada.  We know that CCM made bicycles that various sporting goods stores affixed their own head badges to.  I personally think it would be interesting to create a list of the various sporting goods stores that did this ie to create a list of Merchant Bicycle CCM's which would be much rarer than any individual CCM make.  For example I know that Hawthorne Sporting Goods in Brantford affixed their own headbadge to CCM bicycles that they sold as did a Piano store in St. Thomas, Ontario.  I'm sure that most collectors in Canada have run across this in their municipalities and a compelation of these stores would be extremely helpful to collectors.  What do you think?

Sounds like  great idea. I don't know that I've ever seen a CCM badged as a private label or if I did I didn't recognize it.

Another is GARRY ... made for JH Ashdown, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary & Edmonton...http://www.flickr.com/photos/47865449@N02/4386246271/in/photostream/
