Parts Questions

The first is probably an easy one:  Who is the manufacturer behind the "three arrow" stamp on some cranks.  I have a 1973 CCM Esprit with this logo.

Second question (not so easy): The brake levers of the same bicycle use a Metric M5 x .9 threadpitch bolt.  From what I can tell this is JIS and was also used by Toyota a while back. Could this be a proprietary size used by ccm or just a transient size used for only a short time. Any idea where I can find some?

Thanks and take care,

Daryl

3 Arrows was the brand of Takagi Iron Works Ltd., a Japanese manufacturer who specialized in cranksets and was founded in 1897.

While I don't know the origin of the brakeset, it does not appear to be CCM. Some of the CCM catalogues from the Esprit era (1973-1977) had a page indicating all the CCM manufactured parts on an Elan and the brakes were not included. All the E-series models (Elan, Elite and Esprit) used the same brakes during this period.

While M5 x 0.9 is a possibility, this would also be very close to 10-28 UNS.  As such, it woul be an uncommon size but not proprietary. My approach would be a visit to an older LBS who may have levers that they salvaged for parts. In a pinch, you could use a longer #8 machine screw with a nut and washers. Good luck.

Thanks once again T-Mar. I will be drilling out the threads and using a bolt and washers as suggested.

I find the Takagi cranks every now and then. They seem to be of resonable quality for the period. At least now I'll be able to identify them by name.

Take care, Daryl

Actually, I'd go one size under on the bolt, so you don't have to drill them out. Next time I'm in town, I'll stop by a shop where I know the owner doesn't thow away anything. I may be able to scrounge you up the proper bolt.

Thanks T-Mar.  No worries.  I'll just go the size smaller with a nylon lock nut. Thanks for the offer, just the same.

Take care, Daryl
